A Better Way to Do High School

People notice a difference when they walk on to our campus. Our students tell us they came to The Winchendon School for the academics and for the engaged, dynamic community they discover here. Like our students, we’d prefer not to use labels. We’re large enough to offer a range of activities and classes, while still allowing each student to find their  place and be a part of something larger. We’re about helping your child find the passion to succeed because they love what they’re doing—not just because they expect or want a certain grade.

We see attention as the key to unlocking potential.
How do we do this? Nearly 100 years ago, we said “goodbye” to crowded classrooms. With just 7 to 9 students in most classes, teachers can move away from lectures to work individually with each student, vary classroom activities and approaches, and tailor curriculum to promote engagement and maximize academic progress.

  • We know if comments come at the end of the semester, that’s too late.
    That’s why teachers provide frequent feedback, allowing students to make small adjustments that lead to big results. Research demonstrates that real-time feedback helps students to be more proactive in their own learning and create strategies for success. It’s simple – when students are taught how to improve, they do.
  • Each student is wholly involved in their own educational progress, meaning personalization is more than a buzzword.
    Teens have interests, but without opportunities to pursue them, those interests wither. True personalization requires flexible academic programs that emphasize fieldwork, research, and experimentation in a resource-rich environment. By encouraging students to pursue focused studies beyond the classroom, we stimulate intellectual curiosity, encourage choice, and make learning fun.
  • Teachers are trained in understanding and supporting the different ways that students learn. It’s a priority for all of us.
    Classes at Winchendon average 7 to 9 students in most courses, and this small group size sets the stage for each teacher to know every student well. Research shows that students learn in different ways and possess greatly varied forms of intelligences. Some of the brightest kids, and many of the most successful leaders in our society, simply don’t learn in the way that most schools are still structured to teach. Winchendon teachers are committed to understanding how each of their students learn best, what their strengths are, and how to help each student flourish.
  • We embrace technology and the way it is transforming the world.
    Most of all, we embrace the way technology can help our students learn better, follow their passions, and develop the skills and competencies they will need in the evolving and competitive high-tech economy. Technology enables us to reach and support students with different learning styles, experiences, strengths and weaknesses in a way that was impossible just a few years ago.
  • One School, Two Campuses
    Typically, students applying to secondary school have to make a choice between going to a school with a big campus, lots of facilities, and space, out in the country, or going to school in the city.  Our students get the best of both worlds.  They can live and learn at our day school in the world’s greatest city, NYC, but also have the opportunity to head to our rural MA campus for special programs, events and courses.  Or, if they choose to enroll at our beautiful MA campus and take advantage of our facilities, space and amenities, they’ll also come knowing that when they need their urban fix, they will have opportunities to head to NYC or Boston for workshops, events and other programs.  Some students may even choose to study on both campuses before the end of their high school careers, for our twice a year ColLABs, special classes, or ongoing service projects. Access to the distinct advantages of our multiple campuses will make each student’s high school education richer and more compelling.
